Micro- and nanolayer coextrusion processing incorporates tens, hundreds or thousands of alternating polymer layers within the thickness of traditional polymer films. Reducing the individual polymer layer thicknesses down below a micron, sometimes to 25-50 nanometers, through this specialized form of cast coextrusion has enabled production of films with unique optical, gas transport, water barrier and mechanical properties surpassing blends or traditional multi-layered approaches. A case study leveraging nanolayering as the key step in a novel ground-up manufacturing process for production of lightweight, high performance gradient refractive index lenses for next generation night vision optical systems will be presented.
Following the presentation is a plant tour and dinner will be provided.
